Identity Development :: 2018

Fred, a Northcote local (and fellow Dad at the school my kids attended) was (is!) passionate about the unique opportunity presented to Lawn Bowls clubs in Australia.

As owners or stewards of some excellent (often quite central) spaces, the custodians of one of the more fun/easily accessible technical games available for the public to simply try and enjoy, and facing the challenge of dealing with an ageing (but often enthusiastic) membership, bowls clubs are in an often unique position of opportunity to rapidly bring an influx of new people into their space; the challenge is how to connect.

Fred brought massive enthusiasm forging a  relationship with a local club, and hit on the idea of using the club rooms as a bandroom, staging events featuring local independent music acts, drawing in a hitherto untapped cohort of younger-skewing people; convincing the bowls club to alloy this influx of new people with offers of barefoot bowls, coaching, cheap drinks, good vibes and good times: it’s a heady mix, and really, really works.

He asked if we could come up with an identity and we merged the two great passions: bowls (the asymmetric design of a lawn bowl is clearly evident, in the final design modelled in the origin club’s colours) and music (in our design, shown with the speaker cone mounted in the middle of the bowl; in the colour version shown in the iconic yellow Teflon weave of my home town’s most famous export – Bowers & Wilkins – arguably one of the most famous loudspeaker manufacturers of them all.
